The Park Road to Wonder Lake

With Ben and Sameet on their way back home, I decided to spend a couple of more nights in the park at Sanctuary Campground in Refuge Valley. It is a seven site campground beyond the point where private vehicles can drive on the park road.

The Sanctuary River is actually bigger than the Savage River. This photo is of one braid of the river.

On Saturday morning I took the bus on the park road to Wonder Lake and back. Along the way the mountain was visible from the Eielson Visitors Center. From the bus I saw an amazing amount of wildlife including three grizzlies, four moose, dozens of caribou, and many dall sheep. Those pictures will have to wait until I get the film developed.

The trip to Wonder Lake is over five hours each way, but it was well worth it both for the what you see along the way and the lake itself.

The mountain was visible from Wonder Lake too. I was very lucky to see it on two separate days from so many different vantage points.

The fall colors were in evidence everywhere I went, but nowhere were they as pronounced as at Wonder Lake.
