Fishing with the Halibut King in Homer

After taking the Alaska Railroad from Denali back to Anchorage, I rented a car and drove about 225 miles to Homer. Homer is on Kachemak Bay on the Kenai peninsula. Homer has a natural spit that extends several miles into the bay where the harbor is located.

I had to wait two extra days to go Halibut fishing because of high winds. We finally went out on Thursday even though the water was still pretty rough. We went out on a 40 ft. boat called the Miss Minmar. I am glad it wasn't any smaller.

Captain Chuck knew just where to find 'em. We went out to the mouth of the bay over a 120 ft. deep trench.

We caught 'em. I reached my limit (2) in about an hour of fishing. One I caught that was about 30 lbs. and 3 ft. long. No one caught a really big halibut, but we all had fun (thanks to the Dramamine).

The deck hands filleted 'em. Back on the spit, another company froze my 21 lbs. of fillets and shipped them back to San Francisco.
